Trout (Salmo trutta) is a species of fish that lives mainly in mountainous, relatively cool waters and in summer, but can also be found in lower, submontane and hilly areas, provided the waters are highly oxygenated.
It can also be found at altitudes of 250-300 m, but its main habitat is waters at altitudes above 1000 m.
It reaches 25-30 cm in length and 0.8-1.6 kg in weight, with exceptional sizes of 50-90 cm in length and 15 kg in weight. In Romania the largest specimens, caught in Lake Bicaz, weigh around 6 kg. It has a bluish-gray or dark greenish back with silvery flanks and a whitish abdomen. There are numerous black spots on the body, dorsally and caudally, no red spots and a multicolored stripe along the lateral line, which glows rainbow colors, hence the name.
Trout reproduction is a fascinating process, involving complex behaviors and taking place in a fairly short time. Breeding generally takes place at cooler times of the year, but this can vary by species and region.
